Chairman
Welcome to the Department of Urology. We hope that the information provided will help to introduce you to our outstanding faculty, the unparalleled patient care services we endeavor to provide, the comprehensive post-graduate and fellowship training we offer future urologists, and to the innovate clinical and basic science research questions we are committed to answering.
As the Chairman of the department, I like to envision myself as a General Manager of a championship team representing the South Florida community. My charge is to recruit and sign the superstars of urology, our faculty. To that end, I have been blessed with incredible success. One of my goals is to create an atmosphere in which these “stars” can optimize their abilities to grow on their own, to explore and master state-of the-art technology and to initiate original, groundbreaking surgical advances. Today we are proud to boast of the many talents of our faculty, a diverse group of academic urologists and basic science researchers, each with fellowship training and recognized subspecialty expertise, each dedicated to excellence in patient care, research and teaching. I often am asked: “What makes your faculty different from other urologists?” We like to believe that our academic environment makes us different because it affords a unique setting to practice our specialty. The academic mission of the University of Miami Leonard Miller School of Medicine offers expansive goals and objectives:
- To extend our subspecialty know-how to a broader population of patients by exploring and publishing newly discovered knowledge and expertise.
- To examine our clinical data, analyze our findings and “re-invest” what we learn back into our practice to improve the quality of life of each of our patients.
Recognized for our subspecialty expertise in the areas of urologic cancers, laparoscopic surgery, kidney disease, kidney stones, urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, infertility, and urinary reconstruction, we provide a referral resource to community urologists for complex problems. In addition to academic responsibilities, the faculty maintains busy private practices. The department has also made a commitment to the indigent population of Miami-Dade County at Jackson Memorial Hospital and to veterans at the Miami Veteran’s Administration Medical Center to provide quality urologic care. Our faculty members see their private patients in outpatient settings at the Professional Arts Center in the Medical Center, in Weston, in Deerfield Beach, and at Mount Sinai Hospital on Miami Beach. All patients are admitted for their private care at one of four hospitals: Jackson Memorial Hospital, Cedars Medical Center, and Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center/University of Miami Hospital and Clinics, and Mount Sinai.
Our research, teaching and patient care efforts are all focused on one overriding goal: to establish a tradition of compassionate and expert urologic care for all patients in our South Florida community regardless of socio-economic status, age, gender, or racial and ethnic background. Our challenge is to effectively sustain that commitment and to continue to provide the highest level of service to those who seek our care.
